What the poor need is options, not prescriptions.

The cover story of this summer’s Stanford Social Innovation Review hits like a bombshell: “Microcredit Misses Its Mark.” For the development-savvy, pro-market reader, the claim seems out of line. In the long, spotty history of development aid, isn’t microfinance, with its emphasis on entrepreneurship, grassroots action, and individual responsibility, the one thing we can safely be proud of?

Foreign Policy In Focus asked the Microcredit Summit Campaign’s Sam Daley-Harris to respond to the question of whether microcredit is the solution to global poverty or whether its benefits have been oversold. Robert Pollin, who also provided this FPIF analysis of microcredit’s plusses and minuses, responds to Daley-Harris below. Finally, Felicia Montgomery also of the Microcredit Summit Campaign responds to Pollin.

From student to international banker in one easy step

One feature of a recent graduate’s life is a heightened sensitivity to all of those “How to Manage a Small Budget” and “Saving on a Shoestring” type articles. Those are the ones that recommend starting an early habit of putting money in a 401k and skipping that daily coffee shop latte. Even though I just graduated from college and don’t yet have a 401k, my own benefit package or two-week paid vacation, I just made an important decision that allows me to count my name among those in a respectable profession. I am a banker.

Committed to increasing strategic and compassionate funding for international social change, Grantmakers without Borders is a unique funders network which arose out of a concern that US-based philanthropy provides only marginal support to the developing world, and frequently in ways that do not get at the root causes of social ills.
